Awnings are the coverings that are attached to the doors, windows etc. of house, or any other building. They can be installed on the exterior wall of a building. They can be attached over the area of sidewalk. Usually they are made of wood, aluminum, fabrics, iron or steel. They are also made of acrylic, cotton canvas, vinyl, metal and fiberglass. They get their support from a frame. They are used for residential use as well as for commercial use.

In homes, awnings are used to cover windows or doors. Hotel or restaurants often use them to protect their outdoor dining area. They can provide protection from different weather conditions. They save us from rain, snowfall and wind. They also provide shade from sun in hot summers.

They can help in saving energy. They provide cooler atmosphere to the building effectively saving the energy used in air conditioners. They can also protect your furniture and carpets from the harmful rays of sun and increases their life.

Main designs in awnings are concave, convex, quarter round, dome, elongated etc. Mainly there are two types of them, one is manual in which you have to open them with your hands. Other type is motorized in which you can operate them with electricity.

They can extend to 18 feet and can be 30 feet long covering outdoor space. Most of these are motorized now and you can operate them with a remote.

         Drop Arm– Available in different designs, drop arm type is mostly used to cover windows. They are also available with motors and sometime with wind sensors. It is also available in manual, so that you can retract them by a rope with your hands.

        Patio Cover– Patio covers can protect from winds and rain. Most of them are water proof and also provide shade from sun.
